North District
The North District consists of all areas to the North of Innes St, the west side of Statesville Blvd including Catawba College and covers 8 blocks of the square of town. The North District is commanded by Lt. Greg Beam.
The North District is comprised of 5 separate patrol beats which are patrolled 24 hours a day. The north District is staffed by 22 patrol officers in which two of those act as “Flex” officers. They roam the entire district in areas that are having specific problems and who fill in for vacant patrol beats during the absence of the regular assigned beat officer. In addition to the 22 patrol officers the North District also consist of two sergeants. Sgt. Kevin Wilborn and Sgt. Karen Barbee supervise the patrol officers and oversee the daily operations. These sergeants report directly to the District commander, Lt. Beam.
With the Salisbury Police Departments commitment to Community Oriented Policing the North District officers are very active within their patrol beats. Each patrol beat is structured to assist the officers to become better acquainted with the citizens in their immediate community. The patrol officers are proactive in their patrol beats by conducting foot patrols, which helps increase the ability of officers to know who belongs in specific communities and know when something is out of place or suspicious. They also complete their own criminal investigations when able. They conduct projects to address specific issues when the need arises. The North District officers are committed to improving the quality of life within the community they serve.
Each month Lieutenant Beam attends the Salisbury Neighborhood Action Group “SNAG” meetings. This is an organized community forum held at the police department. Any citizen can come and speak about concerns they have in their community. They also can come to hear updates presented by the police department concerning police activities for the month, major criminal investigations and upcoming events. In addition to the SNAG meetings Lt. Beam also attends the other organized community group meetings to provide them with updates within the district and to receive citizens concerns of problems that need to be addressed by the North District patrol officers.
